Any hood is equipped with a filter that absorbs grease, fumes and unpleasant odors. If you ignore pollution, it will cease to perform its functions. In order not to waste time removing a huge layer of dirt, clean the hood at least once a quarter. You can get rid of it in 15-20 minutes, and our article will help you with this.
Preparatory stage
You can start cleaning only after turning off and partially disassembling the unit. For faster preparation, we recommend that you read the manual for your hood model. After turning off the device, you can proceed to the analysis:
- Remove the lower hood panel. Usually it rests on the latches — snap them off.
Most often, this panel is a metal grease filter. It is cleaned with fat-soluble detergents, which will be discussed below.
- Recirculating models of hoods are equipped with an additional carbon filter, which is located behind the grease filter. It also needs to be removed.
The instructions should indicate how often such a filter needs to be changed. It is usually recommended to replace the carbon filter with a new one every 3 months of active use of the stove. You can buy a new consumable in a household appliance store, order it at a service center or directly from the manufacturer via the Internet.
- There is a pipe from the hood to the vent — remove it. Remove the air filter, which can also be cleaned.
How to clean the hood mesh?
Even if you wipe the hood, it is still not protected from grease, which you can fight with the following instructions:
- Place the case over the bathtub and rinse with water from the shower.
- Prepare a cleaning agent: mix in a bowl 2-3 tbsp. l. mustard powder and 1-2 tsp. shampoo, pour hot water and vinegar into this mixture at the rate of 1 to 1. Mix everything thoroughly and, if necessary, add more water to form a liquid slurry.
- Process the hood with cooked gruel.
- Cover the hood with an old towel soaked in hot water and leave for 15 minutes or more.
- Use a sponge to wipe the hood, also using powder.
- Rinse the hood with clean water and let it dry.
You can clearly see how this method is applied, and what results can be achieved, in the following videos:
Filter cleaning methods
Each of the methods described below is effective, it all depends on your «arsenal»:
- Standard dishwashing detergents. It is important that the product contains substances to combat fat. This is usually indicated on the packaging. The filter must be soaked, and then carefully walked with a sponge. Pour boiling water over it to remove any remaining fat. This method is effective only if the dirt has appeared recently.
The hood filter can be washed in the dishwasher using your usual detergents.
- bar soap. Buy brown soap 72%. Prepare half a bar of soap and 2.5 liters of hot water. Dissolve the soap in water and use the resulting solution to carefully walk over the contaminated surface of the filter. You may need a scraper if the layer of fat is old enough.
- Lemon juice. Another folk method that allows you to quickly get rid of dirt. Take two lemons and cut them in half, after peeling the skin. Rub the surface of the hood with lemon pulp and let it stand for 10-15 minutes. Remove the lemon juice with a damp cloth. If the layer of dirt is old, then the process will need to be repeated several times.
- radical way (no more than 2 times during the entire operation of the hood). Use it only on a filter that has not been cleaned for a long time, and its surface is completely covered with a thick layer of dirt. You need a stainless steel container and drainpipe cleaner. Put on your rubber gloves and get to work. After preparing the product according to the instructions, lower the filter into the container. The reaction will start instantly, so it is important to have time to remove the filter and rinse with running water. Alkali is very aggressive to metal products, so you need to prepare a suitable container in advance.
The drain cleaner reacts with hot water to form chemical fumes and heat up. Therefore, the use of this product should take place in a well-ventilated area, or try not to inhale the vapors emitted.
- Soda. Baking soda can be a great alternative to detergents. Rinse the filter with warm water and apply baking soda to it with a brush or sponge. You can also use a more effective method, which is described in the video below.
Video cleaning of the kitchen hood without chemicals
In the following video, the hostess will share the method she uses to clean the hood filter:
General cleaning of the hood with steam
You can also clean the hood from fat using a steam generator. The extract is processed with steam, as a result of which the fat softens and is easily washed using a sponge and soap solution.
Be sure to wipe the surface with a dry cloth to avoid leaving streaks.
We hope that the recipes, along with the video, helped you get rid of the layer of grease and dirt that covered the hood filter. If something is constantly fried in the kitchen, it is recommended to clean the filter once a month — it will not get worse.
